Harvest: 2008
Method: Hand-harvested
Location: Man Chou county, Ping Dong, Taiwan
Cultivar : chin-shin/Wuyi oolong
Description: From the most southern tea plantation that is located at the seaside of Man Chou county, Ping Dong, we are gladly to introduce to you this really unique Harbor Tea from Taiwan. This is one of the most exciting treasures I've found from my trip to Taiwan this September.
The
Northern Tropic
line passes through the southern part of Taiwan. South to the Northern Tropic, Ping Dong's Man Chou country is the only major tea producing region in Taiwan. And the oolong from this region has a very unique name and nature: Harbor Tea (Gang Kou Cha). The tea has a thin layer of white-frost like appearance, and a hint of seaweed smell from the dry leaves.
In Mr. Zhu's tea farm, where we got this batch of Harbor Tea, two cultivars are planted together: Wuyi and Chin-Shin. So the raw leaves are blended from the two cultivars to make this Harbor Tea.
If you like robust and "heavy" oolong with interesting complexity and layer, you will like this tea! Harbor Tea is not the "main stream" oolong, and the production is small. But because of this, the tea was still being made by very traditional methods such as long-an wood roasting. The liquor has a great clarity and light-amber color. Ripe fruity and nutty fragrance, with a touch of flowery in later brewings, in a robust yet crispy wood-roasted scent background. Nice complexity. Great durability and brewing strength.
